Gilgit-Baltistan · 2,600 m
The old Yabgo capital, terraced up a hillside above the Shyok.
The place
Khaplu is two and a half hours east of Skardu, where the Shyok River comes down from the Karakoram. The palace at the top of the village was the seat of the Yabgo dynasty and is now a hotel.
The Chaqchan mosque, built in 1370 when the valley converted to Islam, is the oldest in the region and still has its original carved timber. Beyond Khaplu the road continues to Hushe, the roadhead for Masherbrum and the K6/K7 walls.
