About this journey

Baltistan in a week, with enough time in each place to stop looking at the schedule. Three nights in Skardu for the lakes, the fort and the Katpana dunes, one in Shigar, and then the plateau.

The Deosai section is the same crossing Indus Overland run as a standalone trip, but reached with four days of acclimatisation behind you rather than straight off the plane. It makes the two nights at 4,000 metres considerably more pleasant.

Culturally this is the Tibetan end of Pakistan. Balti is a Tibetan language, the old buildings are Tibetan in form, and the food owes more to Ladakh than to anywhere south of the Indus.

Four days before the plateau made all the difference

Two nights at 4,000 metres straight off a flight would have been rough. By the time we crossed I had been at 2,200 for four days and slept fine. The Shigar night is a nice change of gear halfway through.

Day six is very long

Recrossing the whole plateau back to Skardu in one day is eight hours in a Land Cruiser on bad track. It is the price of a round trip and they are upfront about it, but know what you are signing up for.

The difference

This route runs other ways too.

Same objective, run differently. The price gap is usually about group size, who carries what, and how many nights you spend acclimatising.
