The place
The Shigar valley runs north-east from Skardu toward Askole, the last village before the Baltoro glacier. It is greener than Skardu, and considerably older.
Shigar Fort was built in the 17th century and restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture into a hotel that is genuinely worth the money. The Amburiq mosque nearby is 14th-century, wooden, and small enough to miss.
