Seven days in the Hindu Kush — Chitral town, the three Kalash valleys, and the Garam Chashma road, with Tirich Mir over all of it.
The Kalasha are around four thousand people living in three valleys south-west of Chitral, practising a polytheistic religion that predates Islam in this region by a long way. They are not a tourist attraction, and this itinerary is built on that assumption.
Every group is briefed before entering Bumburet: what can be photographed, what cannot, when to ask, and what happens if you get it wrong. The operator ends trips early over it, and has. The first stop in the valley is the community-run Kalasha Dur museum, which is the right place to start.
The rest of the week is Chitral itself — the fort, the bazaar, the polo ground, and the Garam Chashma road toward the Afghan border with Tirich Mir, 7,708 metres, over the whole valley.

Meet at the airport or the Lowari road. Afternoon at Chitral Fort, the Shahi mosque and the bazaar.
Up the valley toward the Afghan border, with Tirich Mir over the whole drive. Hot springs at Garam Chashma. Back to Chitral for the night.
Two hours up a rough road into the first Kalash valley. Full briefing on arrival, then the Kalasha Dur museum.
Over to the next valley on foot and by vehicle. Smaller, steeper and quieter than Bumburet. Time with a household that keeps the old calendar.
The southernmost and smallest of the three valleys. Walnut groves, and the least visited of the Kalasha settlements.
Back down to Chitral in the morning. Afternoon at the polo ground — there is usually a game.
Transfer to the airport, or the road south through the Lowari tunnel.

Forty minutes on what you can photograph, who to ask, and what the festivals actually are before we went anywhere near Bumburet. Two people on our trip clearly hadn't expected it. It set the tone for the whole week and it is the reason I would recommend this operator over any other for the Kalash valleys.

Bumburet has the museum and the guesthouses; Birir has almost nobody. Walnut groves and a valley that felt entirely unbothered by us being there.
