Seven days built around light rather than distance — pre-dawn starts, long stops, and nothing scheduled between eleven and four.
This is a photography trip in the specific sense that the itinerary is organised around when places look like something, not around covering ground. Most days involve two shooting windows and a long gap in the middle.
Locations are fixed: Duikar for the valley at dawn, Passu for the cones at last light, Borith for reflections, the Hussaini bridge in flat morning light, Attabad from the water, and Khunjerab for the road itself. There are two nights each in Karimabad, Gulmit and Passu so nobody is packing at 4 a.m.
Group size is capped at six. The guide is a working photographer from Gulmit who knows which side of the valley the light hits in which week of which month, which is the only piece of information that actually matters.

Departures run in the two weeks the valley is worth the flight.
Arrive and drive up. Evening session on the Karimabad terraces with Rakaposhi opposite.
04:30 to Duikar for the valley at first light. Free until mid-afternoon, then Altit Fort and the orchards below it as the light drops.
Attabad Lake from the water in the morning, then into Gojal. Evening on the Gulmit glacier viewpoint.
Flat morning light on the suspension bridge, then Borith Lake for reflections before the wind gets up. Free afternoon.
Move up the valley. Passu glacier viewpoint in the afternoon, then the cones from the highway at last light.
Up through Sost to the pass, shooting the road itself rather than the sign. Back to Passu for a final evening on the cones.
Down the valley with stops wherever the light justifies it. Gilgit by mid-afternoon.

Which is the entire point and almost nobody does it. Six of us, two nights per base, and a guide who knew that in the second week of October the light reaches the Passu cones about eleven minutes later than the app says.

Same objective, run differently. The price gap is usually about group size, who carries what, and how many nights you spend acclimatising.
