Five days on the north side of the ninth-highest mountain in the world — the jeep road, the meadow, Beyal and the base camp viewpoint.
From Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, a single-lane unpaved track climbs 1,500 metres in about ten kilometres to Tato. It is driven by local drivers who have done it thousands of times, in jeeps owned by the drivers' association, and it is the only way up.
From Tato it is an hour and a half on foot through pine forest to the meadow — a small grass shelf at 3,300 metres with wooden huts, a few tents, and the Raikot face of Nanga Parbat filling the whole southern sky.
Beyond the meadow, Beyal camp sits closer to the glacier and is much quieter. From there the base camp viewpoint at 3,900 metres is a long day out and back, ending at the moraine below a mountain that rises another 4,200 metres above you.

Meet at Raikot Bridge on the KKH. Association jeep up the track to Tato, then an hour and a half on foot through the forest to the meadow.
Short walk above the meadow to the ridge viewpoint. Deliberately easy day to let the altitude settle.
Two hours along the glacier's lateral moraine to Beyal, drop kit, then continue to the viewpoint at 3,900 m below the Raikot face. Night under canvas at Beyal.
Sunrise on the face, then back along the moraine to the meadow. Afternoon free.
Walk down to Tato, jeep to the bridge, and onward transfer north to Gilgit or south toward Chilas.

Everyone writes about the jeep track. It is narrow and there is no barrier and the drivers do it every day of their lives. Two hours later you are walking through pine forest and it stops mattering. Beyal is much quieter than the meadow — ask to spend the extra night there.

Wooden walls, a mattress, a lot of blankets. There is no heating and the night I was there it went below zero. Bring a proper bag even though it says huts. The base camp viewpoint day is long and worth every hour of it.
