About this journey

High Pastures run the Minapin route over five days with an extra night at Hapakun, which is the single change that makes the biggest difference. Nobody arrives at 3,300 metres out of breath, and there is a full spare day at the shelf rather than a sunrise and a rush back down.

Groups are capped at four. Tents are single occupancy at no extra cost, there is one porter per traveller, and the camp has a heated dining shelter — which sounds indulgent until the second evening, when the temperature drops below freezing an hour after sunset.

Both ends of the trip are spent in a restored guesthouse in Karimabad rather than in Minapin, so you arrive rested and leave clean. It costs meaningfully more than the other two versions of this trek and the reasons are all on this page.

What you will remember

01

A spare day at base camp

The one thing no four-day version has: a full day at 3,300 m with nowhere to be.

02

Four travellers, maximum

One guide, one camp manager, and never more than four of you.

03

Sleep in your own tent

Single occupancy included, with insulated mats rather than foam.

04

Karimabad either side

A restored guesthouse under Baltit Fort at the start and end.

05

Carry nothing but a daypack

One porter per traveller, so your pack weighs five kilos.

The spare day is the whole point

We were four. On the fourth day we did nothing at all — sat at 3,300 metres and watched weather come and go on the face for eight hours. Every other version of this trek would have had us walking down by then. Expensive, and I would pay it again.

Very comfortable, slightly overpriced

Own tent, one porter each, heated dining shelter, and a guesthouse in Karimabad either side — all excellent. But it is nearly 50% more than the same mountain with another operator and I am not certain the extra day justifies all of it. Depends what your time is worth.

First time above 3,000 metres

I had never slept at altitude before and was nervous about it. The extra night at Hapakun meant I arrived at base camp feeling completely normal. The guide checked oxygen saturation every evening without making it feel clinical.

The difference

This route runs other ways too.

Same objective, run differently. The price gap is usually about group size, who carries what, and how many nights you spend acclimatising.
