About this journey

Baltoro Guides run this as a straightforward mountain trip. The route is identical to every other Minapin approach — up through the terraces to Hapakun, onto the moraine, out onto the shelf at Tagaphari — but the trip is stripped back and priced accordingly.

Groups run up to twelve. Tents are shared three ways unless you pay the supplement. There is one porter per three travellers rather than one per two, so you carry a little more of your own kit. The guiding is the same standard — these are the same people who work the Baltoro — and the food is cooked by the same kitchen crew.

If you have trekked before and you would rather spend the difference on another week in the north, this is the version to book.

Exactly what it says it is

Twelve of us, three to a tent, one porter between three. Nothing was hidden and nothing was oversold. The guide had come off the Baltoro two weeks earlier and it showed. If you want a quiet trip this is not it; if you want the mountain for $390 it absolutely is.

Good value, crowded camp

The shelf at Tagaphari had our twelve and another group of eight on the same night. It was noisy until about nine. The trekking and the food were both fine. Next time I would pay more for the smaller group.

Carried more, paid less, no regrets

Eight kilos on your own back is nothing if you're used to it. Departure was guaranteed as soon as six people booked and it left on time. Shared jeep from Gilgit was fine.

The difference

This route runs other ways too.

Same objective, run differently. The price gap is usually about group size, who carries what, and how many nights you spend acclimatising.
